Want to improve your backhand technique in tennis?
If your backhand feels weak, awkward, or inconsistent, this guide will help you fix it. It’s one of the toughest shots to master—especially for young players. But here’s the good news: you can improve backhand technique in tennis with a few simple tips and regular practice.
🎥 Check out this short Instagram video from ALE Tennis Academy where we demonstrate the proper backhand form in action.
Now let’s break down four key tips that’ll help you fix and level up your backhand fast!
🕐 1. Early Preparation Is the Key
Your backhand starts before you even swing.
As soon as you see the ball coming to your backhand side:
- Turn your shoulders right away
- Bring your racket back with the tip pointing your pocket
- Use the right grip: continental or eastern backhand grip is best
👉 Try mirror swings at home or record yourself to check your preparation.
💥 2. Use Your Whole Body, Not Just Your Arm
Many players try to muscle the ball using just their arms—and it shows.
Here’s what you need to do instead:
- Focus on moving the racket with your left arm, and don’t move the racket too much
- Pull the racket back and then swing forward for topspin
- Rotate your hips and shoulders as you swing (your hip should be facing the net)
This gives you more power, balance, and control.
🎯 3. Focus on the Swing Path
The perfect backhand swing should feel smooth and controlled. Imagine you’re drawing a letter “U” with your racket.
👉 Drill idea: Hit slow-motion backhands without worrying about power. Focus on shape and follow-through. Let technique lead the way.
🏡 4. Practice Drills to Build Muscle Memory
You don’t need a full match to practice. Try these simple at-home or on-court drills:
- Shadow swings: Practice your swing without a ball
- Self-drop feeds: Drop the ball and hit it yourself
- Wall rally: Hit backhands repeatedly against a wall
- Red foam balls: Great for kids and beginners—they’re slower and easier to control
These drills help you feel the correct motion and build consistency.
